Types of Waterproof Fabric

Waterproof fabric is an ideal choice for many purposes. It is perfect for outdoor bunting, furniture covers, and other projects. This type of fabric is also great for sanitary pads and shower curtains. However, it does not offer complete protection from water and moisture.

Fabrics that have waterproof qualities can be made of natural fibers or synthetic fibers. The first method of making a fabric waterproof was by applying paraffin or wax. Another method is to apply a topical surface finish. These finishes will gradually fade away over time and leave the base fabric without any water-repellent features. A final option is to coat the interior of the fabric with polyurethane.

Natural fibers such as wool and cotton are naturally waterproof. In addition, wool can be treated with lanolin to enhance its water-repellent properties. Wool is also thicker and denser, which helps it to repel water better.

Nylon is another material that is naturally water-resistant. However, it does not breathe well. It can be used for items such as rucksacks, peg bags, and table cloths.

Other fabrics that are water-resistant include wool and microfiber. Polyester is also a common choice. Though it is not completely waterproof, it is durable and easy to care for. Microfiber is also inexpensive and is used for different purposes.

Vinyl is another type of fabric that is waterproof. This material is durable and shiny, and it does not fray when it is cut. Oilcloth is also a water-repellent fabric. It is made of tightly woven linen or cotton duck cloth. Linseed oil is added to the fabric for durability and to make it easier to clean.

Some other materials used in creating waterproof fabrics include nylon, ripstop nylon, terylene, and soy-based oils. For example, a ripstop nylon fabric was used to create parachutes during the second world war. Similarly, terylene is used to produce sails and sunshades.

The main advantage of using waterproof fabrics is that they are resistant to water and other moisture. However, they aren't immune to stains and they aren't as strong as other types of fabric. To make sure your clothing or other project is made from the best material, you should be aware of the specifications.

A common example of waterproof fabrics is PVC-coated polyester. It has a polyvinyl chloride coating on the back and is slightly stiff. On the other hand, sandwich PUL has an extra layer of knit fabric sandwiching a laminate fabric. Both of these types of waterproof fabrics are stronger than ordinary laminate fabric.
